French Accent is a bilingual, bicultural, online magazine published every two months and geared toward Anglophones who live in France or who have a strong interest in France , its culture and language. The magazine has a double objective: 1) to provide relevant, helpful and up-to-date information about life in France (administrative steps to take when buying a house or setting up a business in France, information on cultural patterns and events, political analyses, environmental issues, interviews with Francophiles and expatriates living in France who can relate their own experiences living in the country) in order to help facilitate the sometimes-frustrating adaptation to life in France by British and American expatriates who live in France; 2) to provide pedagogical support to facilitate the acquisition of a good level of French language skills for Francophiles anywhere in the world.
French Accent is a unique concept: a large number of the articles are published both in French and in English and many of those article are accompanied by recorded vocabulary lists and/or scenarios that readers can access, thereby giving them the opportunity to listen to the recording of the text as they read along. The magazine's editorial team is composed of Francophones and Anglophones who are bilingual and bicultural and with extensive experience in adapting to new and different cultures. The original purpose of the magazine is to provide support for the great need to learn “real” French as it is spoken in France today as opposed to textbook French one often encounters in the classroom. The impetus and philosophical foundations of the magazine are those of the founders of the online language learning program Learn French at Home.
Since the first issue of French Accent, put online December 1, 2006, the reaction received has been most gratifying and very much appreciated. Today, we have subscribers from all corners of the world.
